Snowmobile season: how to film from your helmet without shaky footage

Snowmobile season is short. From the first real snow in October to late February, it's about just a few weekends with good conditions – and those are the exact rides worth filming. Here is what separates a video worth watching from one that stays forgotten on your phone.

\n\n

The helmet is the steadiest spot on your rig

\n

A camera mounted on the handlebars or cowl is attached to the same chassis that takes the brunt of every bump. The helmet, on the other hand, moves with your head, and your head is the body's own stabilizer – you look where you're going, your gaze stays steady. The footage is smoother and, more importantly, it shows what you were actually looking at.

The gap is what ruins the footage

\n

A mount that doesn't sit flush against the shell leaves a small gap. When stationary, you can't see it. At 60 km/h over packed snow, that gap turns into high-frequency vibrations that no electronic stabilization can completely remove. That's why our mounts are designed for a specific helmet model: the base follows the curve of the shell so the entire surface sits flush.

Cold weather makes the tape the weak link

\n

3M VHB tape is stronger than most think, but it bonds by flowing out against the surface – and that requires warmth and time. This is the most common pre-season mistake: attaching the mount in a cold garage the night before the first ride. Instead, do this:

\n
    \n
  • Attach the mount indoors, at room temperature.
  • \n
  • Wipe down the helmet with the cleaning wipe first – wax and dirt are the tape's enemies.
  • \n
  • Let it sit overnight before heading out into the cold.
  • \n
\n

And one non-negotiable rule: never drill or screw into a helmet shell. The shell is engineered to distribute an impact, and a hole makes it worse at doing just that.

Snowmobilers rarely wear snowmobile helmets

\n

Most riders we talk to film in an mx helmet with goggles or an adventure helmet with a visor – not in a dedicated snowmobile helmet. That's why a large part of our range already fits: LS2 MX700 Subverter and MX701 Explorer, Klim Krios Pro, Bell MX-9, Shoei VFX-WR, Scorpion ADX-1, Airoh Commander, and many more.

\n

If you wear a true snowmobile helmet – CKX, Ski-Doo, FXR, 509, Castle X – it's not available as a ready-made model from us yet. In that case, you can choose the universal mount, or order a custom mount tailored to your helmet and specify the brand and model in your order.

\n\n

Before the snow arrives

\n

Get your mount in place before the season kicks off. It's the only piece of gear that needs 24 hours to cure, and it's easy to forget until there's a meter of snow outside the garage.
